Squarespace starts offering domain name registration

Company now offers domain name registrations in addition to website building tools.

Website building platforms such as Squarespace, Wix and Weebly have been taking a bite out of domain name registrars’ pockets in recent years. They’re attracting people looking to start a website that would normally begin their search at the likes of GoDaddy.

And now Squarespace is offering domain name registration directly on its site.

The company is enabling customers to buy a domain name as the first step of creating a website on its platform.

Squarespace is acting as a reseller using Tucows’ (NASDAQ:TCX) OpenSRS platform.

The company isn’t aiming for the discount-seeking crowd. Domain registration starts at $20, a high entry point. But the company offers free whois privacy and guarantees the same renewal rate.

The biggest selling point I see is simplicity. SquareSpace’s domain page matches the simplicity and sleek image of its site offering. Just start typing in a domain and you get availability results almost instantly. Combine this with a website development tool that’s easy to use and you have a solid package for small business owners trying to build their web presence.
