Squarespace 7 Adds Getty Images, Google Apps, More
Web publishing and e-commerce platform Squarespace has announced a major update to the service that revamps the interface, adds a partnership with Getty Images for art assets, integration with Google Apps for more business tools, and more templates.
The new version, called Squarespace 7, looks completely different. The redesigned interface, which is more pared down, focuses on WYSIWYG controls. As you design and edit a website, you can see the changes on the preview in real time. Additionally, as you resize the browser window to make it smaller, the preview automatically adjust to show different mobile device screen sizes.
According to a statement from the company, Squarespace 7 will be rolled out to a select group of existing customers first, who will get access through their Website Manager dashboards.
"Design matters. Packaging matters," said Anthony Casalena, CEO and Founder of Squarespace, at an event announcing the new version.
"Building a great website, finding and licensing top-notch imagery, setting up domains and email—these all remain difficult tasks for many people today," Casalena said in a statement. "With Squarespace 7, we're taking another huge step in helping our customers bring their ideas to life."
One big feature in Squarespace 7 is that users will be able to license high-resolution images direclty from Getty Images for only $10 apiece. This integrations means businesses and individuals who use the service to build their websites will have access to around 50 million images (a mere slice of Getty Image's total database) that they can easily and legally use on their sites.
The update also adds 15 new category-specific templates, an area where the service had been particularly light compared with its competitors. Among the new templates is one for restaurants and another for weddings.
Users who have been waiting for better integration with their email accounts, calendar, file storage, and other business tools will be able to connect their Google Apps for Work account directly to Squarespace in version 7.
With Squarespace 7, the company's prices have not changed, with plans starting at $8 per month. For more web hosting and site building advice, see How to Pick a Good Web Hosting Service and How to Build a Website.
