New Top 1,000 Twitter Accounts And Why Companies Should Pay Attention

When looking at your online presence, you should be aware that social signals continue to rise in importance. The strength of your social media presence will directly impact your brand, products and services with respect to their position online.

Your social presence will be judged not only by the engagement it attains but also by how connected that presence is to the web.

Companies and individuals working to increase their social signals via Twitter should take note of the lists of top Twitter accounts. These lists are important because they give new insight into better positioning a company online.

Since Twitter numbers are easily manipulated and tweets often automated, there had to be another way to rank individual Twitter accounts.

At SMX Advanced in Seattle, Majestic SEO Marketing Director Dixon Jones explained a new method for ranking Twitter accounts based on each account’s prominence on the web. This method has resulted in an advanced look at the top Twitter accounts.

Majestic SEO’s method uses ranking factors that include the number of links to a Twitter account and the quality of the website linking to that account. It also removes any influence from Twitter, including the number of followers. It allows a website to register one point per Twitter account; multiple pages within one website that each link to a specific Twitter account only count once.

Here are the new top 25 Twitter accounts:

1. Joomla!
2. Barack Obama
3. Twitter
4. YouTube
5. Lady Gaga
6. Prestashop
7. Justin Bieber
8. Mashable
9. Squarespace
10. Wikileaks
11. New York Times
12. YOOtheme
13. WPTwits
14. Google
15. Pope Francis
16. The White House
17. WordPress

Dixon and Majestic have opened up the entire list of the top 50,000 Twitter accounts here:http://blog.majesticseo.com/forbes/

Jabez LeBret: Why is this list different than other top Twitter lists?

Dixon Jones: This list is different because it is based on the number and, importantly, the quality of websites that link to the Twitter profiles. Whilst other scores like Klout aim to measure things like the engagement of people, this intrinsically requires data from Twitter itself. Majestic requires no input from Twitter, and the score cannot be affected easily by manipulating tweets. Lastly, our list does not assume the “influencer” is a person. It may be a technology or a brand, and it may be in any language.

So in short, our list is independently collected data based on engagement from other websites, not other Twitter users, and is totally global and language agnostic.

LeBret: What factors did you use to create this list?

Jones: We measured the citation flow, trust flow, external back links, referencing domains, referencing IP addresses, and referencing subnets. For those that are really interested in what these terms all mean, there is a video on this at http://blog.majesticseo.com/training/link-metrics-for-the-future-welcome-to-flow-metrics-video/.

LeBret: How did some of the lesser-known companies end up on the list?

Jones: There are different reasons for some of these. For most, the angle is that some technologies themselves are able to influence through Twitter. For example, Prestashop is a popular e-commerce platform, and all the pages users create tend to link through to the Prestashop Twitter profile. Businesses can take a lesson from this strategy in expanding the amount of quality links back to their Twitter accounts.

LeBret: Marketing departments need to move beyond seeking only engagement on social media channels and begin building a comprehensive social presence. This will require linking your website to various social media profiles, including Twitter. Encourage your biggest fans to add a link on their websites connecting to your social media profiles. Expanding the influence of your social media presence will only boost your social credibility.
